A Reaction to COAL

Flip a Switch: Blow Up a Mountain: The Real Cost of Mountaintop Removal

B. Mark Schmerling’s exhibit Flip a Switch: Blow Up a Mountain: The Real Cost of Mountaintop Removal will be displayed in the Weinberg Center’s lobby. B. Mark Schmerling is a professional photographer with a burning desire to use his skills to bring awareness of environmental and social injustice to the public.  Though documenting some of the actual mining activity and sites, Schmerling has more often turned his lenses on the brave individuals whose lives have been made a horror by mountaintop removal mining in particular, and the dirty politics of coal in general. He has also tried to record pristine natural areas threatened by coal extraction, to portray what is being lost, and what remains to protect.  The exhibit is free and open to the public, Tuesday – Wednesday 10am– 4pm; Thursday – Friday 10am– 6pm; and Saturdays 10am – 2 pm at the Weinberg Center forthe Arts located at 20 W. Powerhouse Jazz Vocalist - Catherine Russell

The Weinberg will close out its 2008-2009 season with powerhouse jazz vocalist, Catherine Russell.  After years of performing as a back-up singer, Catherine’s credits read like a who’s who of popular music, including: Paul Simon, Jackson Brown, Cyndi Lauper, Rosanne Cash, Madonna and David Bowie, she is now earning the praise and attention she deserves.  With her band, Russell has distilled the robust, good-time essence of Southern juke joints and lindy-hopping Northern dance halls into a jazz performance that radiates interpretive power yet remains touchingly vulnerable.  Showtime is 8pm at the Weinberg Center forthe Arts located at 20 W. “Brother against… Insects”: The role of insects in the Civil War

The fact that microbes caused more death than hostile fire is well-known to the student of the American Civil War.  However, the role of insects in the transmission of disease-causing organisms is often overlooked.   Maladies such as dysentery and malaria have an important or critical insect component and accounted for tremendous suffering during the war.  Surrounded by insects such as flies, lice, and fleas, both Union and Confederate soldiers often found themselves battling insects more than each other.  As Gary L. Miller, Entomologist reveals the influence of insects on soldiering during the Civil War, he will mix science with history, incorporating hands-on-objects to help us better understand the role of insects in the Civil War.   Dr. Miller, a research entomologist with the USDA, has published many works on insects and insects in the Civil War that have been celebrated as pioneering works.  The free lecture series is held at the National Museum of Civil War Medicine, 48 E. Patrick Street from 7:30 - 9pm. Doors open at 7pm.   For more information, call 301-695-1864 or visit www.civilwarmed.org
