Retail Market Analysis

In November of 2003, H. Blount Hunter Retail & Real Estate Co. completed a retail analysis of Downtown Frederick. This study sought to understand the existing consumer base and downtown’s competitive positioning, to define strengths for continued development of downtown’s retail mix, and to maximize return from public investment by leveraging infrastructure and linking activity centers.

Through consumer surveys and data analysis, the consultants found that Downtown Frederick is in a strong competitive position for retail.  They praised downtown’s well-established ambiance, unique “sense of place” and strong entrepreneurial business environment.  Their surveys revealed strong unmet demand for retail – enough demand to support the creation of new retail stores or expanded sales in existing businesses.
