Brinton's Brandy

National Museum of Civil War Medicine
48 E Patrick St, Frederick, MD 21701

Taste Civil War history in this new partnership between the National Museum of Civil War Medicine and Tenth Ward Distillery. Reserve 1 or 2 of only 100 bottles of ‘Brinton’s Brandy’ by purchasing the “Brinton’s Brandy” package and be a part of a series of exclusive events hosted by the two organizations in Frederick, Maryland. The “Brinton’s Brandy” package includes admission to exclusive events, tastings, a museum membership, a hands-on experience of bottling brandy, plus your very own bottle of “Brinton’s Brandy.”

“The drink is named for an innovative surgeon who found that giving small bribes of cherry brandy assisted him in his role as the first curator of the Army Medical Museum in Washington DC during the Civil War,” explains Jake Wynn Program Coordinator for the NMCWM. “This project is another ‘taste of history’ experience. You’ll hear stories of the medicinal uses and production of cherry brandy during the Civil War as part of this project – and be able to imbibe in it as well.”

Modeled after a traditional Civil War era spirit recipe, Brinton's Brandy is an apple brandy distilled from McCutcheon's cider and infused with local cherries. While this spirit would have been called a "cherry brandy" at that time it typically would have been based with an apple brandy or rye whiskey then infused with cherries after distillation.

The exclusive package is $65 and includes everything listed below – a value of over $100.

One 750 ml bottle of “Brinton’s Brandy,” two commemorative glasses, a package of chocolate bullets made by Perfect Truffle, a membership to the NMCWM, plus admittance to these exclusive events:

December 7, 2017: Attend the kickoff at the National Museum of Civil War Medicine from 7:00 – 8:15 PM for a tasting, presentation, and discussion about brandy’s importance in America’s bloodiest conflict. It will include the story of Dr. John Brinton who used Cherry Brandy for a variety of purposes.

January 21, 2018: Join us at Tenth Ward Distilling Company as we bottle Brinton's Brandy. You will get the opportunity to hand label and stamp your own bottle. Participants will also be able to join a complementary tour of the distillery accompanied by a tasting of their spirits.

February 12, 2018: Join us at the National Museum of Civil War Medicine to celebrate the conclusion of the first partnership between the Museum and Tenth Ward. We will tour the galleries of the museum and taste samples of Tenth Ward’s spirits in the “most haunted building in Frederick.”
