Beginning Jewelry I

Delaplaine Visual Arts Education Center

Learn the fundamentals of jewelry fabrication and metalsmithing to create a forged cuff or form-folded bracelet, fold-formed or hammered earrings, and a chain necklace. Techniques such as piercing, drilling, sawing, stamping, annealing, and simple soldering will be covered. Geared for the absolute beginner, this class will emphasize safety, tool mastery, and skill development while supporting students through the completion of original jewelry pieces. REQUIRED: Signed studio waiver, safety glasses, earplugs, ventilated respirator (3M #8515 recommended). Students enrolled in jewelry classes must be 17 or older. Bring the following SUPPLIES: 6x12 inch, 18-gauge copper sheet; 6x6 inch, 20-gauge copper sheet; 20 ft of 14-gauge copper wire; 24 inches, 20-gauge sterling silver wire. NOTE: Required safety items and metal supplies will be available for purchase at the Delaplaine. Approximate cost of metal is $32.
